While chatting with a fellow Loser this week I was reminded that we all have people in our lives that drain us or set us off, sucking away our energy. It’s hardest when they’re family because we feel pressured to not confront these people or seek distance from them.

When it comes to making changes in our life, especially leaving religion. It’s important that people allow us to process. It was so frustrating when I would have scriptures and Fox news articles from conservatives and Christians sent to me when I was exiting the system, even after I left. My own mother, who I love dearly, and whom equally loves me sent me new ones every day. I finally had to confront her and then block her on Facebook. Yes, I blocked my own mother on Facebook.

I conveyed to her that these things did nothing but stir my hurt. A hurt I was working on healing and to heal I had to stop having knives thrown at me. She didn’t respond well at first but she began to understand over time. As a result, our relationship has gotten better. It’s become natural now that we don’t talk about church, religion, or politics. We talk about our lives and all that we’re feeling and doing. We talk about great family memories. Her Christian language hasn’t changed, but that’s who she is and it doesn’t bother me. I love my mom, a lot.

I only have a handful of religious friends now, we don’t talk much, but when we do it’s lovely and life-giving. (They’re most definitely on the liberal left side of Christianity, more in love with humanity than the bible.)

I know that you are worthy of life-giving relationships. I also know that if you can spin your focus and energies away from the vampires, you’ll enjoy meeting new relationships that value who you are, simply for who you are.

Let me know how you’re doing!
