TODAY'S ANONYMOUS CONFESSION
Hello Zac. I am a recovering Evangelical who was once very active in a former Seattle megachurch. I have been enjoying your show. Here is something I wish I had never done and something I hope to see before I die:
I wish I would have never allowed religious, spiritual leaders to speak into and manipulate my life or the lives of my young family.
Before I die, I want to see all 4 of my children living happy adult lives free from religion, shame, and guilt.
All the best to you and your show.
I TWEETED THIS, THIS MORNING.
Stay Humble. Stay Teachable. Until that teacher lies to you, manipulates you and uses you. Then, fuck that teacher. See how these positive platitudes breakdown?
I’ll still be humble and teachable, but I ain’t trusting you if you’re still following those “teachers”.
A COMMON THEME I'VE FELT AND HEAR A LOT FROM YOU AFTER LEAVING ANY LONGTERM COMMUNITY, JOB, OR RELIGION.
"I FEEL LIKE I WASTED MY LIFE."
It’s a horrible thing to meditate on because it just leads to darkness.
It’s been a struggle for me for sure. The work of the podcast, diving into life and community outside the church, and therapy have all been helping me to refocus on productivity and what makes me happy.
HOW TO MOVE PAST FEELING LIKE YOU WASTED YOUR LIFE.
HAVE NEW HABITS.
I give up freely what is no longer serving me.
I release it to create space for what inspires me.
When you are indeed at peace and in touch with yourself, nothing anyone says or does bothers you, and negativity or drama can't touch you.
Waiting for someone to help you is a trap. Improving yourself is a gift. Things begin to fall into place when you minimize hate/envy & maximize gratefulness. When I know who I am and what I want I can freely celebrate others when they succeed because I know who I am and what I want is different than them.
